Franceville

Franceville

The small village of Masuku was chosen as a place to resettle freed slaves and renamed Francheville ('town of the freed') in 1880. Later the name was modified into Franceville, after its colonial ruler of France. The city is the eastern terminus of the Railway line from Gabon's capital. It is important as the center of Gabon's manganese and uranium industry. Apart from the hanging bridge at Mvengué 20 km away there is not much to see in the area. The market in Franceville is Marché Poto Poto.

There are quite many hotels and restaurants in town. Franceville sits on the Mpassa River, 520 km southeast of Libreville.
