Gedi

Gedi is a small town, not far from Rapar in the Kutch district of Gujarat. There are several places of interest in Gedi.

The temple of Mahadev Achaleshvar dates from 1579. It was built out of white limestone and features a domed porch and a shrine.

Not far from the temple is the Malan Well. Its water, however, was brackish and not suitable for drinking and it fell in disrepair. Next to the well used to be a temple called Ashaba Pir's temple, but nothing of it remains.

Mahavirswami's Jain temple is a terraced building with a large verandah in front of four shrines. Its central dome is supported by 16 pillars. The temple features marble images of Tirthankaras (Mahavir), Adinath and Shantinath.

The temple of Lakshminarayan is a pyramidal shrine with two domed porches. It was constructed in 1840 on top of a previous temple that was destroyed in an earthquake in 1819. There are several marble images of Lakshminarayan, Dasavatar and Ganpati.

Gedi has a bustling market. A carved stone image of Kshetrapal can be seen there under a jar tree.

Accommodation may be hard to find in Gedi, but there are several places where food can be purchased.
