Ghardaïa is one of the most interesting oasis towns in Algeria. The name Ghardaïa is often used for the five small towns in the Oued M'Zab Valley: Beni Isguen, Bounoura, El Atteuf, Ghardaïa and Melika.
The people living in this area belong mainly to a Muslim sect known as the Mozabites, that separated from mainstream Islam, around the 12th century. There is a market in the center of the old town, where nice carpets and hand-woven rugs are sold. The mosque is very scenic and so is the main square.
Ghardaïa is on the Wadi M'zab. The area was included in the UNESCO world heritage list in 1982.
Ghardaia has a camping and some hotels. There are also various restaurants, and the bus station is just outside Ghardaïa on the other side of the riverbed.
