Giant's Castle Nature Reserve is one of the oldest parks in South Africa. It was established in 1903 to preserve the area's high lands. The park's lowest point sits at 1,300 meters and it includes peaks up to 3,280 m. The park got its name from Giant's Castle, which is a mountain, whose shape resembles a sleeping giant's profile.
The environment mainly consists of rugged mountains and the reserve is home to the rare lammergeyer. The best place to see the birds is at Lammergeyer Hide, where they are fed during the weekends in the summer months. There are numerous bushman rock paintings throughout the area, with Main Cave and Battle Cave being the most important.
There are several hiking trails in the reserve, but if you plan to stay somewhere overnight you must register with the warden. Guided horse rides can be arranged. There are three areas where you can camp, apart from various huts and caves. They are Hillside, Injasuti Camp and main camp. The nearest town of any size is Estcourt.
