The second largest city and capital of Burundi is Gitega. It is in the center of the country, some 65 km east of Bujumbura. It used to be known as Kitega during colonial times and was Burundi's capital until 1962. With the abolition of the country's kingdom in 1966, Bujumbura became the capital. In 2019, Burundi's parliament voted to restore Gitega to its capital status.
Gitega is the city where the National Museum is located. The museum is not very big, but it is worth the visit.
About 10 km from Gitega, in Gishola, so-called Tambourinaires sometimes perform. You can find out at the museum if they are. There is no public transport between the two towns. The Mission Catholique has a guesthouse where you might stay.
