Gqeberha is a large port city, on the Indian Ocean, 950 km south of Pretoria. It was formerly known as Port Elizabeth and locals still tend to refer to it as PE, while others use the Afrikaans phrase 'Die Baai'. The city was founded in 1820 by governor Rufane Donkin, who named it after his deceased wife Elizabeth. There is a monument that bears testament to this in the Donkin Reserve Park in the center of town. Another nice park is St George's Park. Port Elizabeth was renamed Gqeberha in 2021.
There are several interesting sites in Gqeberha. The Campanile, or bell tower, which was erected in 1923. The tower offers great views over the city. City Hall. Fort Frederick dates from 1799.
There are several A walking trail called Route 67 runs through Gqeberha. It starts at the Campanile and ends at the Vuysile Mini Market Square and runs past 67 public artworks that were created by local artists. Gqeberha's waterfront is also worth a visit.
The railway station is west of the city center, while the airport is to the southeast. A network of freeways connects the city with the rest of South Africa. There are many hotels and restaurants in Gqeberha. The city has many good beaches, of which King's Beach and Hobie Beach are the most popular ones. Humpback whales can be sighted there. The pier in Gqeberha is also a popular tourist spot.
Around Gqeberha you will find hills and mountains that offer excellent viewing points over the city. Addo Elephant National Park is 72 kilometres (45 miles) north of town.
