Graskop was founded in the 1880s as a gold mining camp. Later it became a tourist destination and nowadays it promotes itself as the 'window on Mpumalanga'.
The town is on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment and offers spectacular views over the lowland, nearly a kilometer below. The scenic viewpoint of God's Window is not far from town. There are also numerous waterfalls in the vicinity. At the Panorama Gorge waterfall you can descent into the gorge via the Graskop Gorge Lift. At the same location you can also cross the gorge on a zipline.
One of the entrance gates to Kruger National Park is only 60 km east of town.
There are several campsites and numerous hotels and restaurants in town. Graskop is in the northeast of Mpumalanga, 270 km east of Pretoria.
