Guiyang (贵阳市)
Guiyang is the capital of the Guizhou province in Southwestern China. The city sits on the northern side of the Nanming River. There are several interesting markets in Guiyang, as well as the Hongfu Monastery not far from the summit of the 1300 m-high Qianling Mountain.
Some places of interest in Guiyang include:
- The Jiaxiu Pavilion (甲秀楼, Jiǎxiù Lóu) is located on the southern tip of the Guiyang Nanming River. It was originally built in 1598 during the Ming Dynasty, but it was destroyed and rebuilt many times over again. The current pavillon dates from 1982.
- Qingyan Ancient Town (青岩古镇, Qīyán Gǔzhèn) is located in the south Guiyang. It dates from 1378, the period of the Ming Dynasty.
- Xifeng Concentration Camp (息烽集中营, Xīfēng Jízhōngyín) was the largest prison of the KMT government during the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937.
- Confucian Center (孔学堂, Kǒngxuétáng) is an organization associated with China's Ministry of Education. It teaches Chinese culture and language around the world. The Confucian Temple is in the center of Qufu city. It was built in 478 BC.
- The Xifeng Hot Spring (息烽温泉, Xīfēng Wēnquán) can be found in the northeast of Xifeng County. The hot spring is surrounded by mountains, pines, firs and bamboos. The beautiful surroundings are the location for sanatoriums, hospitals and villas.
- Qianling Park (黔灵公园, Qiánlíng Gōngyuán) is in the northwest of Guiyang. It got its name from Mount Qianling. In the park you'll find beautiful old trees and more than 1,500 species of flowers and trees, as well as over 1,000 sorts of medicinal herbs. In the park is the Hongfu Temple, which dates from the Ming dynasty.
- Huaxi National Wetland Park (花溪湿地公园, Huāxī Shīdì Gōngyuán) is in the northern part of Guiyang's Huaxi district. It is the only urban Wetland in China and boasts a wide variety of plant and animal life.
A section of the Great Wall of China runs along Guiyang and can be climbed there.
The area around Guiyang consists of mountainous and forested terrain. Guiyang's used to be an important center for aluminum production, phosphate mining and optical instrument manufacturing, but its economy has shifted towards the service sector.
Qianling East Road (黔灵东路) is known as 'Drinking Street' and offers a wide variety of pubs, bars and café's. The restaurants there generally offer good food. On Shaanxi Road (陕西路) is a bustling night market, where you can try local foods such as mutton chops, baked snails and roast chicken. Another night market is on Bo'ai Road (博爱路). This market is more of a combination of western and eastern foods. You'll also see many older people playing Mahjong or practice square dancing during the late evenings. Accommodation is widely available in Guiyang.
