Hamhŭng (함흥시)


Hamhŭng is the capital of South Hamgyong Province. The city is situated on North Korea's east coast, some 185 km northeast of P'yongyang, but there are few sights and only a handful beaches. Hamhŭng is a major industrial center and a leading port for North Korea's foreign trade. Textiles, metal-ware, machinery and chemicals are produced in Hamhŭng and oil is refined and food processed there. There are several coal mines in the vicinity of the city.

The founder of the Yi dynasty, which was the last imperial line in Korea, was born in Hamhŭng.
