Heimaey Volcano
The Heimaey volcano is one of more than 200 volcanoes that have erupted in Iceland over the centuries. After 5000 years of inactivity the Heimaey volcano erupted in 1973, releasing hot ash into the air and lava flows across the island of Heimaey. The only town on the island, Vestmannaeyjar was evacuated and when the inhabitants returned later, they found the island had been enlarged by about 2.6 km² (1 sq mile) and the solidified lava had improved the town's harbor by narrowing its entrance.
The Heimaey volcano is 115 km southeast of Reykjavík.
