Hermannsburg (Ntaria, Northern Territory)

Lutheran missionaries founded the Hermannsburg Aboriginal Settlement in 1877. It includes the old Hermannsburg Mission, which is an important monument to the skill and dedication of the missionaries' work. It is one of the best preserved examples of traditional German farmhouse architecture outside Germany. The settlement is also known as Ntaria.

The Hermannsburg Mission consists of 11 low, whitewashed buildings, including a church and a schoolhouse that date from the 1880's. The mission is in Australia's Northern Territory, on the banks of the Finke River, about 1,250 km south of Darwin and 2,000 km northwest of Canberra.

Hermannsburg Aboriginal Settlement is the gateway to the tracks that lead to Finke Gorge National Park and Palm Valley. The tracks can only be navigated by 4WD vehicles.
