Hienghène sits on Grande Terre's northeastern coast and is the site of the Lindéralique Cliffs. The dramatic, black limestone cliffs rise up to 60 m (197 ft) out of the sea in some places and are topped with sharp pinnacles. The many caves in the cliffs are inhabited by swallows and flying foxes.
The Goa Ma Bwarhat Cultural Center includes a small museum. Theatrical, musical and legend-telling performances are held there occasionally.
Hienghène is also a good place to start the Chemin des Arabes hike, which takes you across Grande Terre's central mountains to the island's western coast. The walk takes about three days and there are several places along the route where water s available.
Accommodation is available in the form of an expensive resort, just south of town. There you can also visit an imitation Melanesian village. The best way to get to Hienghène is by bus from Nouméa, 240 km to the southeast. The road through the mountains is very scenic.
