Ica

The area of Ica has been inhabited by indigenous people for thousands of years. By the time the Spanish conquerors arrived, Ica was part of the Inca Empire.

The Spanish claim to have founded Ica in 1563.

In 2007, the city was hit by an earthquake and many buildings were damaged.

The Huacachina Dunes surround Ica. The sand dunes are excellent for sand-boarding.
The Huacachina Oasis is not far from Ica. It is the only oasis town in South America.

The Municipio de Ica (Municipality of Ica).
The Museo Regional de Ica 'Adolfo Bermúdez Jenkins' (Regional Museum of Ica 'Adolfo Bermudez Jenkins') was established in 1946. The archeological museum is dedicated to the different indigenous cultures that inhabited Peru. The collection includes 26,000 artefacts, mostly from the pre-Hispanic era.
The Plaza de Armas (Parade Ground) is the main square in Ica.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Ica. The city sits at the fringe of the Atacama Desert and receives only about 1 cm (0.4 in) of rain a year. Ica is located on the Pacific coast, some 320 km (200 mi) southeast from Lima.
