Inari is an interesting town on Lake Inari in northern Finland. The area's indigenous people are Saamelaisia, who's Sami culture has its own language and habits. You will be able to see many examples of that culture in the Saamelaismuseo (Siida Museum), an open-air museum where reindeer farming, fishing and craft shops show the traditional Sami way of life.
Close to the museum starts a 7 km long trail that leads to the Pielpajärven Wilderness Church. The church was built in the 18th century and features a sauna. During the summer it is possible to visit Ukko Island on Lake Inari by boat, while during the winter snow-scooters will get you there. The island is an ancient cult site for local fishermen.
The area around Inari is home to some 40,000 reindeer, but if you might not see any for some reason, you can always visit the reindeer farm, some 15 km from town. Accommodation is available in Inari. The town is 980 km north of Helsinki, far north of the Arctic Circle. During the summer the sun never sets, while during the winter temperatures can drop to -50°C and it is pitch dark 24 hours a day.
inari is a good place to stay if you want to visit the Lemmenjoki National Park, or the Urho Kekkonen National Park. Another interesting area in the region is the Hammastunturi Wilderness Area. Otsamo Fell is a popular hiking destination.
