Isla Zapatera (Zapatera Island)

Isla Zapatera (Zapatera Island)

Isla Zapatera is the largest of the 365 islands that form the archipelago of Las Isletas in Lago de Nicaragua (Lake Nicaragua). The island includes some of Nicaragua's most important archaeological sites and is protected as a national park. There are various tombs and other pre-Columbian structures, but the 'giant stones', Indian built statues that stood there once, have been moved to museums elsewhere.

Accommodation is available in the island's main town of El Carmen.
