Isla Daphne Major (Daphne Major Island)

Daphne Major is a volcanic island just off the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos archipelago. The island is actually a crater rim, devoid of trees. Its highest elevation is 120 m (394 ft) above sea level.

Access to the island is restricted and in practice only granted for scientific research. Daphne Major finches have been the major source of the understanding of animal evolution.

Biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant studied the finches there over a period of 20 years and demonstrated the role of natural selection in biological evolution.

Other birds on the island include Galápagos martins, blue-footed booby, Nazca booby, short-eared owls, red-billed tropicbirds and frigate birds.
