Islas del Maíz (Corn Islands)
The two Corn Islands (Islas del Maíz in Spanish) are about 80 km off the coast from Bluefields. The larger of the islands measures about 6 km², while the smaller one, 18 km away, is only 1.5 km². The Corn Islands were once a safe haven for buccaneers, but nowadays they are popular holiday destinations.
Both islands boast white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, excellent scuba diving at the coral reefs and good fishing possibilities.
There are several hotels and restaurants on the Corn Islands, especially on the larger one. The Corn Islands are 350 km east of Managua.
