Jiayuguan (嘉峪关市)

Jiayuguan was named after the nearby Jiayuguan Pass, which used to be a Han Chinese outpost. The Great Wall of China used to extend beyond the pass, but after a fortress was built there in 1372, it was considered to be the western tip of the empire and the parts of the wall beyond there were left to crumble.

The fort is known as the Impregnable Defile Under Heaven Fort and it is open to the public. Nearby you will find an interesting art gallery. Also in the vicinity are several rock paintings and the Magical Glacier.

Accommodation is available in town. Jiayuguan has rail connections with Lanzhou and Ürümqi. Jiayuguan is 1440 km west of Beijing.
