Jinan (济南市)
Jinan is the capital of the China's Shandong Province. The area of present-day Jinan has been inhabited at least since 2000 BC. Nowadays, it has a population of almost 10 million people, making it one of the largest cities in Shandong. Jinan is often called the 'City of Springs', because it is home to 72 artesian springs (七十二名泉).
Points of interest
- There are 72 springs (七十二名泉) in Jinan, most of which are located around the center of town and flow north to converge in Daming Lake.
- The Bàotū Spring Park (趵突园) is centered on Bàotū Spring. The water in the spring pool is usually foaming and gushing, making it look like it is boiling and hence its name Bàotū, which means 'jumping and leaping'. The park also contains several other springs.
- The 10,000 Bamboo Garden is located in Bàotū Spring Park. It features a beautiful pavilion.
- Jǐnán Cǎn'àn Jìniàn Bēi (济南惨案纪念碑, Jinan Massacre Monument.
- May 3rd Massacre Memorial Garden is located in the Bàotū Spring Park, not far from the Jinan Massacre Monument.
- Daming Lake Park is not far to the northeast from the Bàotū Spring in the center of Jinan. The park is centered on the natural Daming Lake, which is fed by many springs. As a result, its water-level remains constant, independent of rainfall, or droughts. Lixia Pavilion was constructed during the Northern Wei period. The pavilion sits in the middle of the lake. Other buildings in the park, include towers, ancestral halls, pavilions, bridges and terraces. The lake features several small islands.
- Hill of Thousand Buddhas is also in the vicinity. It can be reached by cable car from Jinan.
- The Five Dragon Pool (五龙潭) is close to Bàotū Spring Park.
- The Black Tiger Spring (黑虎泉) is located on the southern city moat.
- The Baimai Springs (百脉泉) is located in the city of Zhangqiu City, east of Jinan.
- Jǐnán Bǎilǐ Huánghé Fēngjǐngqū (济南百里黄河风景区, Jinan Hundred Miles Yellow River Scenic Area) is an ecological cultural theme park along a 52 km long section of the Yellow River. The area includes a levee, which is known as the Great Wall over water. Entrance to the Jinan Hundred Miles Yellow River Scenic Area is located in 166 Luokou Huancheng Road in the Tianqiao District.
- The Huánghé Sēnlín Gōngyuán (黄河森林公园, Yellow River Forest Park) covers the northern bank of the Yellow River. It measures 100 hectares and includes a wide variety of different trees. The park features a leisure area where you can roller-skate, fishing and barbecua, as well as practice cue sports, table tennis, archery, shooting, etc.

- The Shāndōng Shěng Bówùguǎn (山东省博物馆, Shandong Provincial Museum) sits in the foothills of Thousand-Buddha Mountain. It is the largest museum in the Shandong Province. Its collection contains more than 210,000 natural and historical items from throughout the province. The museum was founded in 1982 and the exhibition is divided into 8 different sections, which are: Ancient Coins, Art Treasures, Dinosaurs, Fossil Collections, Specimens, Stone Sculptures, Treasures of Shandong Province and Warship of the Ming Dynasty.
- The Jǐnán Shì Bówùguǎn (济南市博物馆, Jinan Municipal Museum) is located at the southwestern foot of the Thousand-Buddha Mountain, north of the city center. It has a collection of more than 20,000 items, many of which were recovered from the city area.
- The Shandong Art Museum is a large museum of fine arts. it is located close to the Provincial Museum.
- Shāndōng Shěng Kējì Guǎn (山东省科技馆, Shandong Science and Technology Museum).
- Guǎngzhì Yuàn (广智院, Guangzhi Yuan) is a historical building that once housed the Yidu Museum and later the forerunner of the Shandong Provincial Museum.
- Zhāngqiū Shì Bówùguǎn (章丘市博物馆, Zhangqiu Municipal Museum) is located in 135 Zhao-Qing Road in Zhangqiu City.
- The Shandong Provincial Library is the principal library of the province and contains more than 5.2 million historical documents, as well as a large collection of western books. The library was founded in 1909, not far from Daming Lake. In 2002, it was moved to its current location at 2912 Second Ring East Road in the eastern High-tech Park.

There are countless hotels, cafés and restaurants in Jinan. There is also a cable car that takes you up to the hill of Thousand Buddhas. The city is 375 km southeast of Beijing.
