Jufureh (Juffure)

Jufureh (Juffure)

Jufureh lies on the northern bank of the Gambia River, about 25 km southeast of Banjul. It is a very small village, but is became famous in the 1970's after Roots was published. Author Alex Haley traced his roots back to Jufureh. In his book he describes how his ancestor Kunta Kinte was captured and taken to America as a slave at the end of the 18th century. After the books publication Jufureh was overran by tourists, but now it has become quieter again.

The nearby village of Albreda is also worth a visit, although its main attraction, the 17th century slaving station known as the 'factory' is more or less in ruins. There is a small museum about the slave trade.

In the middle of the Gambia River is James Island where you can visit Fort James, an old slaving fort. It was originally built in 1651. Locals will take you there by boat.

To get to the area you will have to cross the Gambia River in Banjul and then get a ride to Jufureh.
