Kanniyakumari (Cape Comorin)

Kanniyakumari (Cape Comorin)

Kanniyakumari, or Kanyakumari, means 'The Virgin (or Kanya) Princess' and refers to goddess Devi Kanya Kumari. On the coast is a temple dedicated to the goddess. The city is on the southern tip of India, where the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea meet and therefore it is sometimes referred to as 'The Land's End'.

During Chaitrapurnima, the Tamil name for the day in April when it is full Moon, you can see the Sun set and the Moon rise over the ocean simultaneously. For this reason, Kanniyakumari is a popular pilgrim destination.

Some places of interest in Kanniyakumari include the 41-metre (133 ft) tall Thiruvalluvar Statue and Vivekananda Rock Memorial off the coast.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants in town. Kanniyakumari is 2220 km south of Delhi. It was formerly known as Cape Comorin.
