Kaw is sometimes referred to as 'Caux', which means 'marsh' in French. The town indeed sits on a swampy area on the banks of the Approuague River. Kaw is a good place to stay if you want to visit the nearby wildlife area. The surrounding marshes are home to a wide variety of bird life as well as plenty of caimans (a smaller relative of the American alligator).
The area around Kaw is one of French Guiana's most accessible wildlife areas, but even then it requires some effort to get there. From Cayenne a paved and dirt highway runs all the way up to the river north of Kaw. You will have to cross the river by launch to get to the town. It is also possible to take a launch downstream from Régina. Some accommodation in the form of basic lodging is available in Kaw. The town is 60 km southeast of Cayenne.
