Kengtung (Kyaingtong)
The scenic town of Kengtung, also known as Keng Tung or Kyaingtong, is the historic center for the Khün culture of Myanmar's Shan State. The remote town is centered on Naung Tung Lake and boasts countless aging Buddhist temples, as well as decaying British colonial architecture.
There are many more temples, pagodas and monasteries in the mountain valley where Kengtung is located. On Kengtung's western outskirts is an interesting, water buffalo market that is held daily.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Kengtung. The town can be reached by an overland trip from Tachilek (The Chaleak) on the Thai border. Kengtung is 625 km northeast of Yangon (Rangoon).
