Kerlingarskarð

Kerlingarskarð

According to legend the Kerlingarskarð was haunted by a female troll. Later she turned into a stone pillar at the foot of the Kerlingarfjall Mountain, which forms the eastern side of a pass. Kerlingarskarð means 'witch pass'. The nearby lake is said to be haunted as well. You can camp in the area, if you dare and if you can stand the weather, which is often abysmal.

The pass is no longer maintained and you can't travel it anymore, as it was closed in 2001.

It used to be possible to take a bus from Reykjavík to Stykkishólmur, but that connection takes a different route nowadays. The pass sits at an altitude of about 300 m. Kerlingarskarð is 105 km north of Reykjavík.
