Kharga Oasis (الخارجة)


The Kharga Oasis is the largest of the Egyptian desert oases. There are several towns in the Kharga Oasis, of which the town of El Kharga is the main one, with around 100,000 inhabitants. The Kharga Oasis is the most developed oasis in Egypt and there are numerous tourist facilities.

Most people come to the area to see the Saite-era Temple of Hibis, just ouside El Kharga, on the road to Asyut. The temple was built around 500 BC. Another 1st millenium temple can be seen near the town of Dush. Not far from the temple you'll find the interesting Badr el Wait; a 4th century Coptic cemetery. There are countles archaeological sites in the oasis.

Not too far away you can aslo visit some hot springs, 9th century ruins of an Islamic town and the ramains of a Roman Temple.

There is a lot of accommodation available in the Kharga Oasis, but most of it is quite expensive. There are also numerous restaurants.
