Khatyn

Khatyn

In 1943, the village of Khatyn was completely destroyed by the Nazis. It has never been rebuilt and the site is now a memorial, where you can see a huge sculpture that represents the atrocity's only survivor, Yuzif Kaminsky. A further 185 villages that the Nazis completely annihilated are commemorated at the nearby Graveyard of Villages. On the site you will also find concrete posts; the Trees of Life that symbolize 433 villages that the Nazis destroyed, but that were rebuilt. A Memory Wall lists Nazi concentration camps in Belarus, as well as the names of some of their victims.

Khatyn is 55 km north of Minsk, but there is no public transportation to the site. Organized trips are available though and it is also possible to take a taxi from the capital.
