King Edward Point is often shortened to KEP. It is a permanent British Antarctic Survey research station and serves as the administrative capital of South Georgia Island.
In 1906, King Edward Point was named after British King Edward VII and it has been the residence of a British Magistrate administering the island since 1909.
The research station was established in 1925. King Edward Point is located in the Cumberland East Bay on the northeastern coast of the island, not far from the former whaling basis of Grytviken.
