Kitwe

Kitwe

Kitwe is a large mining center, 310 km north of Lusaka, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There is nothing of interest in Kitwe itself, but the surrounding area offers some interesting sites.

Kitwe lies in an area of woodland, mixed with dambos and farmland and crossed by several rivers. West of the city center lies Mindolo Dam where you can enjoy various activities including boating, motorcrossing, canoeing and table tennis, amongst others. THere is a nice dam for swimming, but also a swimming pool, a picnicking field and ofcourse a bar. Southeast of Kitwe are the small Mwekwera Falls, where you can swim and visit fish farms.

If you like bird-watching, Chembe Bird Sanctuary is the place to go. It is about 20 km west from the city and sits in a scenic woodland area and has a small lake with some camp sites on its shore. You can hire boats there to go fishing. Kumasamba Lodge is another nice place to visit. It has a swimming pool and you can see different animals there, including crocodiles, pythons, cobras and lizards. In the nearby forest you might see larger animals such as lions.

Apart from the lodge there are numerous hotels in Kitwe, as well as bars and restaurants.
