The scenery of the unspoilt country around Kuruman is magnificent, but the town itself is of little interest. The only sights worth a visit are the Eye of Kuruman where spring water bubbles up and the nice old Moffat Mission station, just outside town, which was founded in 1821. Kuruman was also the first place where David Livingstone arrived as a missionary in 1841.
Some places of interest in and around Kuruman include Billy Duvenhage Nature Reserve, the Raptor Route, the Truce Tree, which dates back to the 1914 Rebellion, Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is South Africa's largest privately owned game reserve, the Bird Sanctuary that is home to about 115 bird species, the Wonderwerk Cave, the Kuruman Hiking Trail, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Parkoffers mine excursions, Boesmansgat is a sinkhole that is situated at Mount Carmel Farm. This cave is acclaimed to be the sixth deepest submerged cave in the world. The Kalahari Meerkat Project is included in the Kuruman River Reserve.
There are some hotels and restaurants in Kuruman, as well as a campsite. Kuruman is 515 km southwest of Pretoria. The Kuruman River, which is dry except for occasional flash floods after heavy rains, is named after the town.
