Láo Shān (崂山)


Láo Shān (Mount Lao) is the world's most famous Taoist mountain. It is located in China's Shandong Province close to the East China Sea on the southeastern coastline of the Shandong Peninsula.

The mountain is 1,132.7 m (3,716 ft) high and it is included in the Qīngdǎo Láoshān National Park.

There are several temples on Mount Lao.

Points of interest
  • The Huálóu Gōng (华楼宮, Hualou Temple) was established in 1325, during the reign of the Yuan dynasty. It was rebuilt during the Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as during the Republican era.
  • The Huáyán Sì (华严寺, Huayan Temple) is a Buddhist temple on the eastern slope of the mountain.
  • The Tàiqīng Gōng (太清宮, Temple of Supreme Purity) is the largest temple complex on Mount Lao. The Taoist temple was originally constructed during the Northern Song Dynasty, which ruled the area between 960 and 1279. The extant structure dates from the Ming Dynasty, when the temple was rebuilt. The temple features a spring.
  • Tàipíngsì (太平寺, Temple of Supreme Peace) is located on the northern slope of Mount Lao. It was built during the Song dynasty, but it has been rebuilt several times since.
  • The Shàngqīng Gōng (上清宮, Temple of Great Purity) is also known as the Shàng Gōng (上宮, Upper Temple) is located on the southeastern slope of Mount Lao, not far above the Temple of Supreme Purity. The temple was originally built during the Song Dynasty and rebuilt between 1297 and 1307, during the Yuan Dynasty. The spring in the Temple of Great Purity is called Shengshuiyang (Ocean of Holy Water Spring).
  • The Lóngtán Pù (龙潭瀑, Longtan Waterfall) is south of the Temple of Great Purity. It has a height of 20 m.
Láo Shān is 30 km (19 mi) northeast from Qīngdǎo. It can be reached by cable car.
