Lake Abbé (Lac Abbé)

Lac Abbé, or Abhe Bad, is one of the chain of salt lakes in the desert in the southwest of Djibouti, on the border with Ethiopia. The lake is fed by the Awash river.

The only way to get there is by 4WD and you will need a guide if you don't want to get lost in the desert. The lake is only about 150 km from Djibouti City, but it will take you 2 days to get there. The road ends in the town of As Ba, after that it's only sand.

At the lake you will see strange naturally shaped chimneys called fumaroles. They are formed by steam escaping from the volcanically active ground. On the lake itself thousands of flamingoes roam.

4WD vehicles can be rented in the capital and guides can be found there as well. You should drive to the southeast, in the direction of Dikhil and As Ba, after that your guide will show you the way.
