Lakeba is the most important island of the southern Lau Islands. It used to be a place where Tongans and Fijians traditionally met. Europeans also visited it frequently, but they later established the trading settlement of Levuka on the island of Ovalau.
There are several caves on Lakeba Island, of which Oso Nabukete is the most famous one. Oso Nabukete means 'too narrow for pregnant women'.
Tubou, or Tumbau, at the southern side of the island is the Lau Group's regional capital. The town has a post office, a hospital and a telephone exchange. Tongan chief Elene Ma'afu and Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, the first Fijian to receive a university degree from overseas are both buried in Tubou.
The fishing village of Levuka and the village of Nasaqalau are also worth a visit.
Accommodation is available in Tumbau, as well as in several other towns on Lakeba Island.
