Larnaca is a holiday resort on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, some 40 km southeast of Lefkosia (Nicosia). During the summer season it is full of tourists and there are many hotels, apartments, bars and restaurants, including all sorts of holiday-facilities.
The palm-tree lined seafront promenade is called Finikoudes. It features a bust of Cimon. A marble bust of Zeno of Citium can be seen at the crossroads near the American Academy. The Stoic philosopher Zeno was born in 334 BC and later founded the Stoicism school of philosophy. A monument to comemmorate the Armenia genocide stands on Athenon Avenue.
Some places of interest include the church of Saint Lazarus, the Catacomb of Phaneromeni church, Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, the Kamares Aqueduct, the Bekir Pasha Aqueduct and Larnaca castle.
Larnaca was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Citium, which was the birthplace of forementioned Zeno.
There are numerous museums in Larnaca, including: the Larnaca District Archaeological Museum, Pierides Museum, Agios Lazaros Byzantine Museum, the Kallinikeio Municipal Museum of Athienou, Larnaca Medieval Museum, Larnaca Municipal Museum of Natural History, Larnaca Municipal Historical Archives (Museum of Larnaca), Folklore Museum 'Kostas Kaimakliotis' (Aradippou), Theasis Museum, Kyriazis Medical Museum and the Museum of Michel Platini.
Larnaca has good beaches, a seaport and a marina.
