Larteh

Larteh

Larteh is on the Akwapim Ridge, 56 km north of Accra. The town is one of Ghana's most important centers of traditional religion, with many witch doctors and fetish priests. The Akonedi Shrine can be visited, but you will have to get a guide to show you around. Sometimes it is possible to visit the local chief.

The name Larteh was derived from 'La', which means fire and 'Te', which means stone, thus the town's name means firestone.

There are magnificent views over the surrounding area from Larteh, but there is no accommodation in town.

The festival of Odwira is held in Larteh every year in September, or October.
