Laulasi and Busu Islands
The Laulasi and Busu Islands are about 16 km off the coast from the town of Auki in the Malaita Province. The people on the islands worship sharks, because they believe that their ancestors often live on as sharks. As a result, the animals are treated with almost divine reverence and the ancient art of shark calling is still practiced regularly on the islands.
During the ritual, pork is fed to the sharks. The pork that is used in the ritual comes from black pigs and the blood in the meat is red, so the colors black and red are taboo on Laulasi and Busu. Remember that when visiting the islands!
The islands are one of the places where shell money is made.
You can get to the Laulasi and Busu Islands by canoe, or dugout, from the town of Talakili, except for Saturdays, when canoes are not for rent. Talakili is not far from Auki. The Laulasi and Busu Islands are some 100 km northeast of Honiara.
