Likoma is one of the two islands in Lake Malawi off the coast from Mozambique, belonging to Malawi. The other island is Chizumulu, but Likoma is the largest of the two. There are some good beaches on the island with good snorkeling and scuba diving possibilities. The surroundings are beautiful and baobab trees with their huge trunks are scattered all over the island.
Some of the island's main sights include the Anglican Cathedral of St. Peterand the busy market. Likoma with its 17 km² (7 sq miles) is one of Malawi's densest populated areas. About 6,000 people live on the island live.
The island is served by ferry from the mainland twice a week. Traffic between Likoma and Chizumulu is by dhow.
