The Roman settlement of Lindum Colonia developed from an Iron Age village on the River Witham. The town slowly developed into what is nowadays Lincoln. The town is home to a beautiful 11th-century cathedral that is dramatically situated in the center of town. There are numerous narrow, winding streets that lead up to the cathedral and there are usually only a few visitors. Lincoln Castle dates from the 11th century as well. Other interesting sights include the 16th century High Bridge, the Westgate water tower and the Collection, which holds objects found at local archaeological sites.
