Most people visit Lonar to see the impressive Lonar meteorite crater lake. The crater is about 2 km in diameter and several hundred meters deep. There is a salt-water lake at the bottom, which is fed by a small stream. Due to evaporation, the water that is left in the lake gets saltier over time.
There are many ruined Hindu temples on the lake shore, as well as on the crater's rim. Some of them include the temples of Vishnumandir, Wagh Mahadev, Mora Mahadev, Munglyacha Mandir and Goddess Kamalaja Devia. Numerous monkeys live in and around the crater.
In the center of Lonar town is the temple of Daitya Sudan. it is a good example of early Hindu architecture.
There is some accommodation in Lonar, including a resort only 50 m from the crater rim. The town is 960 km south of New Delhi. Lonar can be reached by bus from Nagpur, Akola, Buldhana, Malkapur, Jalna and Nanded. If you arrive by train, you shoudl get off at Shegaon, or Malkapur and continue by bus or taxi.
