Lyon is a large city at the confluence of the rivers Rhône and Saône, some 400 km southeast of Paris. During Roman times, Lyon was the capital of the Gauls and you can still visit many Roman ruins, the most impressive being the ones on Fourvière hill. It boasts countless historical landmarks several of which are inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the districts of Old Lyon, Presqu'île and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse.
Lyon is an industrial powerhouse and a large student city.
There are countless museums in Lyon, as well as many intersting churches. The old town is a nice place to just wonder around; you can take a boat trip on the banks of the rivers; the Parc de la Tête d’Or offers a nice escape frpm the city's chaotic streets; the Place Bellecour is also worth a visit, as is the Fourvière Basilica.
You can climb some of the surrounding hills for stunning views of the city. There are many hotels and restaurants in Lyon.
