Maastricht
Maastricht is the oldest city in The Netherlands. It is situated on the strip of Dutch soil between Germany and Belgium, in the south of The Netherlands. The city was already populated during Roman times and its oldest proven history dates back to 50 BC, when the Romans set up camp there along the Maas River (Meuse River).
In Maastricht you can still see several parts of the old city walls. There is also a labyrinth of tunnels that stretches underground for about 10 km on the city's western outskirts. The tunnels were built for defensive purposes. One of the most visited attractions in Maastricht is the Vrijthof, a beautiful courtyard in the center of town.
Maastricht gained international publicity in the 1990's as it was the city where one of the most important treaties of the European Union was signed.
Because of the proximity of both Belgium and Germany, Maastricht is a very international city. There are many restaurants in town that offer dishes of the neighboring cuisines and you'll hear a lot of German and French being spoken. There is a wide variety of hotels in Maastricht. The city is known throughout The Netherlands for its carnival festival, which is held every year in February. Maastricht is 175 km southeast of Amsterdam and it is the capital of the province of Limburg.
