Madang

Madang

Madang is the capital of Papua New Guinea's Madang Province. It used to be called Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen when Germans first settled there during the 19th century. The city lies on a peninsula on the country's northern coast and is often regarded as the 'prettiest city in the Pacific'. There are numerous parks, ponds and waterways and there are superb snorkeling and scuba diving possibilities. Excursions to nearby Kranket Island, which boasts a beautiful lagoon and several interesting villages, and Long Island, are available in Madang.

Accommodation is available in town. Madang is 500 km northwest of Port Moresby.
