Mariëntal (Tsaraxeibes)

Mariëntal, or Tsaraxeibes, was founded in 1912 by German missionaries and served as a railway stop on the railway line between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop. It was named after Maria, who was the wife of one of the settlers. It is an agricultural town that is of little interest to travellers. There is a scenic church on the edge of town.
The Hardap Dam, 15 km north of town is a reservoir on the upper Fish River. The area is home to numerous bird species. There is also a game park where you can see antelope, zebra and many birds. Maps of the walking trail through the park are available at the entrance.
There is a camping site at the Hardap Dam, the second largest reservoir in Namibia. In Mariëntal itself are several hotels and restaurants. Mariëntal is 240 km southeast of Windhoek.
