Masqat (مَسْقَط, Muscat)

Masqat, or Muscat (depending on how you translate it from Arabic) is the enchanting capital of Oman. It has been a trading port since at least the 1st century. By the 18th century Masqat had become a regional powerhouse and its influence stretched as far as Zanzibar. Starting in the 1970s, the city experienced rapid growth and development.

Masqat has been ruled by the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire, amongst others. Each one has left its marks on the capital.

Most buildings in Masqat are low and whitewashed.

Points of interest
