Mataram

Mataram is the administrative capital of Lombok. It is virtually merged with the towns of Ampenan, Cakranegara and Sweta to form a 'city' on Lombok.

In Mataram you can see dyeing and weaving in the town's various weaving factories. Ikat cloth and hand woven songket sarongs are on sale there. The machinery in the factories is usually very old and most of the hand-and-foot powered looms look almost ancient.

Mataram boasts a beatiful mosque and many intersting temples. The city is about 1070 km east of Jakarta.
