Matheran means 'jungle topped'. It is the nearest hill station to Mumbai and a good place to stay a few days if you want to get away from Mumbai's hustle. Matheran became a popular hill station during the times of the Raj, as a nice place to relax and enjoy the cooler climate. It is about 50 km east of Mumbai and on clear days it is possible to sea that city from Hart Point at an altitude of 800 m (2624 feet). The town boasts interesting colonial architecture.
There are numerous trails around the scenic hills and especially during weekdays it is a nice and quiet place (motorized vehicles are prohibited), but during the weekends it can get very crowded.
The trip from Mumbai to Matheran includes a scenic train ride. Accommodation and restaurants are available at Matheran.
