Mazsalaca

Mazsalaca boasts a 13th-century Lutherian church and an interesting woodcarving museum, but most visitors come to Mazsalaca to visit the Werewolf Pine, some 4 km from town.
According to legend, you can turn yourself into a werewolf if you crawl through the roots of the tree while muttering certain incantations under a full moon. You can get to the tree by following the Salaca River, down stream. After about 2 km (1.5 miles) you come to a railway bridge and another 2 km further is the tree.
Nearby is the Stairway of Dreams, where lovers can find out how well they suit each other. In the Devil's Cave is a spring, whose waters are said to have healing powers.
Accommodation is available in Mazsalaca. The town is in the northern Vidzeme, in the north of Latvia, 115 km northeast of Riga. A suburban rail line connects the town with Riga, but the one daily train is very slow.
