Mbombela is the capital of South Africa's Mpumalanga province. Its name used to be Nelspruit, but in 2009 this was changed into Mbombela. It is the largest town in the area and it is surrounded by citrus plantations. There are several interesting sights in Mbombela.
A craft market is held on Saturdays on the pedestrians-only Promenade. Just south of the center is the Sonheuvel Reserve, where rock paintings can be seen. In the same area are some nice hiking trails, such as the Kaapschehoop Trail and the Uitsoek Trail.
Not far from Mbombela are the Sudwala Caves and the viewpoint known as God's Window in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. The Lowveld National Botanical Garden is located on the banks of the Crocodile River. It is home to some 500 indigenous plant species.
There are quite a few hotels and restaurants in town. The minibus and taxi park is on Brown Street and long distance buses stop at the corner of the Louis Trichardt and Paul Kruger roads.
The i'langa Mall is a modern shopping center spanning 45,000 m². It offers a wide variety of different stores. The Mafunyane Waterpark is very popular with both locals and tousists.
The towns of Barberton and Witrivier are quite interesting, and not too far from Mbombela. One of the entrance gates to the Krugerpark is 40 km east of town.
Mbombela sits on the Crocodile River, 280 km east of Pretoria and 330 km (210 mi) east of Johannesburg.
