Meizhou Dao (Meizhou Island, 湄洲岛)

Not far off the coast from the city of Quanzhou in Fujian province is the small, scenic island of Meizhou Dao. There are numerous temples on the beautiful island and Taoists believe that Mazu, goddess of the sea, was born on Meizhou Dao. Celebrations are held every year on the 23rd day of the third moon to honor Mazu's birthday. One of the most interesting sites on Meizhou Dao is the Heavenly Empress Palace, or Meizhou Ancestral Temple (天后宮湄洲祖廟). It started as a small shrine that was erected in honour of Mazu after her death in the 10th century.

Meizhou Town (湄洲镇) is the island's capital.
