Meroë (م,رواه)

Meroë (م,رواه)

The Meroë Ruins are on the east bank of the Nile, 50 km northeast of Shandi. The ruins are remnants of the Meroitic era (350 BC to 350 AD) and they include pyramids, temples and palaces. Meroë was the capital of the Kushitic Kingdom of Meroë. In the early years of the Kingdom it was influenced by Egyptian art and religion, but later it became isolated and it developed its own script and art, which is reflected in the ruins.

After several attacks by other tribes, the city was finally destroyed by the Christian kingdom of Axum (Ethiopia). The ruins of the Amon Temple are between the Nile and the railroad line. About 1 km east of Meroë is the Temple of the Sun. Some 5 km (3 miles) from town you can see about 200 Nubian-style pyramids, most of them in ruins. You can take a taxi in Meroë to visit them.

Accommodation is available in Meroë and so are restaurants. The nearest train station is at Kabushiya. Meroë is 200 km northeast of Khartoum.

Because of civil war it is not recommended to travel to Meroë (م,رواه), or any other destination in Sudan at this moment.
