Middelburg was founded in 1864 as Nasareth, on the banks of the Klein Olifants River. Nasareth was halfway ('in the middle') between Pretoria, which was then capital of Transvaal, and the gold-mining town of Lydenburg, and thus it was renamed Middelburg.
In T1890, the Dutch Reformed church was built. The British built a large concentration camp in Middelburg during the Second Boer War. There are 1,381 graves of women and children who died there and the Memorial Museum was built right next to it.
