Middelburg (Mpumalanga)

Middelburg (Mpumalanga)

Middelburg was founded in 1864 as Nasareth, on the banks of the Klein Olifants River. Nasareth was halfway ('in the middle') between Pretoria, which was then capital of Transvaal, and the gold-mining town of Lydenburg, and thus it was renamed Middelburg.

In T1890, the Dutch Reformed church was built. The British built a large concentration camp in Middelburg during the Second Boer War. There are 1,381 graves of women and children who died there and the Memorial Museum was built right next to it.

Middelburg is a good place to stay if you want to visit the nearby Kruger National Park. Not far from town is the Middelburg Dam, where the annual Middelburg Mile swimming event is held. Another interesting place is the Botshabelo mission station museum and its associated Ndebele tourist village.

In the vicinity of Middelburg are several hiking trails.

There are numerous hotels and hostels in Middelburg. Middelburg Mall features a wide variety of shops, restaurants and cafés.
